Meet Kate: The Early Riser

November 7, 2017

Meet our Early Riser’s and Night Owl’s this is a series launched by thisopenspace where we sit down with the most talented community members in Toronto. We asked them to share with us everything to do with why they love to sleep.

Meet Kate, the co-founder of Bad Girls Collective, Senior Manager of Marketing and Business Development at The Drake and a unique early riser. Outside of her daily hustle, Kate is a triple threat; she is always active as she loves to run, spin her way through her morning and or evening at RIDE Cycle Club, and spend her weekends throughout the winter skiing the slopes. Furthermore, she is a pillar of the community in Toronto she thrives on creating genuine connections and supporting the cities finest brands and businesses. Kate fills her days from morning to night all while making sure she keeps things balanced – you may be wondering how she powers her day? Well, we found out and she attributes her go-getter lifestyle to a unique sleep routine a conscious effort to rest easy.

Are you a Night Owl or Early Riser? And Why?

I’m both. I love to sleep, but there’s really too much to be done in a day to sleep that much. I definitely cherish a lazy weekend and an all morning sleep-in when they can happen, as well as an early bedtime.

How does being an Early Riser impact your daily hustle?

Having a day hustle and a side hustle means I have to squeeze in sleep where I can. With Bad Girls work and meetings happening outside of the standard nine to five, balancing work and workouts, boyfriend time, friend/family time and me time can definitely be challenging, as it is for all of us! But it all really depends on the day and I strive for balance. I like to roll with the punches, keep myself in check and make sure I’m getting enough sleep along the way.

Tell us about your daily sleep ritual (give us all the details)?

I like to wind down by watching a show, reading a book or just hanging out and listening to music. I’ve been trying to revamp my nightly routine and limit screen time in my bed – since I used to fall asleep more often than not with my laptop open in my bed and my phone beside me after falling asleep watching Netflix in bed while scrolling through Instagram.

I’ve also introduced a new skincare routine into my life – a lot of great products from Deciem and Glossier… since apparently I’m getting older than I feel and I’d prefer not to look it. I also love candles and essential oils – trying to make my room vibes as ‘zen’ + relaxing as possible.

Currently, what can we find in your bed side table?

Art prints that I love, candles, Aesop hand cream and room spray, a notepad and pen for thoughts (or things I forget) that come to me in my sleep or when I wake up, pictures of my favourite humans, essential oils and the book I’m currently reading.

What is your favourite sleep-related product?

I’m obsessed with a robe sample we’re currently working on that’s a collaboration between Drake General Store’s famous Shared robe in Kotn’s softest ever Egyptian cotton. We’re working on a plan to launch these in our stores – but in the short term, I was lucky enough to get my hands on the sample and I’ve been living in it pre getting into bed.

Rapid Fires:

Long Shower or Bubble Bath?

If I had a bath I wanted to bathe in I’d go bath – but for now, definitely a long shower girl.

AM or PM Exercise Class?

Depends on the season. In the summer I’m definitely an AM girl. In the winter, I can’t get out of bed so I opt for PM.

How can we find your bedroom – hot or cold?

Definitely cold.

PJ’s or Au Naturale?

Au Naturale. All the way.
