Meet Jess: The Early Riser

Meet our Early Riser’s and Night Owl’s this is a series launched by thisopenspace where we sit down with the most talented community members in Toronto. We asked them to share with us everything to do with why they love to sleep.

Meet Jessica Graves – a self-proclaimed Night Owl with an Early Riser routine. Jess is a west coast girl (born and raised in Vancouver) who recently moved to Toronto, with a passion for people, community, self-development and health + fitness. Her hustle is with Kit and Ace, where you can find her creating new content for their training programs, developing the showroom and office teams and supporting showrooms across Canada in their operations. Things don’t stop here – Jess has a side hustle rooted in fitness as an instructor at RIDE Cycle Club, where she connects with her new found community to help them sweat, and stay motivated to crush their day. Ultimately, Jess loves to help those around her learn and grow and where she finds the fuel to pursue her goals is attributed to her consistent, and conscious sleep routine.

Are you a Night Owl or Early Riser? And Why? 

I’m a Night Owl with an Early Riser routine – although I love staying up late (I often hate going to bed because I don’t want my day to end!), I have learned to appreciate the calm and productivity that early mornings bring. It was actually my love for my career at Kit and Ace that converted me to an Early Riser because I was truly excited to start my fulfilling and challenging day with amazing people that I admired. After experiencing how fulfilling early mornings could be, I switched my workouts from PM to AM – the best part is that once you’re off work for the day, the only thing you have to worry about is what you are having for dinner or where you’re going for drinks.

How does being an Early Riser impact your daily hustle?

Thankfully, I am now an Early Riser as it supports me instructing 6:00 am RIDE classes and getting to work by 8:30-9:00 am every morning. It’s an incredible feeling coming home from a sweat, having a hot shower, making a pour-over coffee, having a healthy breakfast and checking your emails all before 8:00 am – it sets you up for a day of success because your mind is in the realm of completing tasks and making stuff happen. It can be challenging when there’s an evening work event, late RIDE class or a social activity, but I make sure to balance it out throughout the week. 

Tell us about your daily sleep ritual (give us all the details)? 

My health regime is a huge part of my sleep ritual – I drink a big glass of lemon water, take all of my vitamins and ensure I take good care of my skin (a deep cleanse, toner, hydrator and everything else in between). I always turn on my diffuser (lavender or bergamot scent) while I get ready for bed and leave it on throughout the night, as well as use my favourite sleep roll-on. I try to put my phone away and on silent and read a chapter or two of my current book, write in my journal or meditate – powering down mentally is just as important as powering down physically.

Currently, what can we find in your bedside table? 

You can find a few of my favorite reads – Joan Didion, Cereal Magazine, my journal and a notebook. You will also find my diffuser, Vitruvi sleep roll-on, charcoal infused eye-mask (for those mornings when you do want a sleep in) and I keep plants nearby.

AM. Always.

How can we find your bedroom – hot or cold? 

Cold (I always have a fan on, even in the dead of winter).

Au Naturale.
