Curated is a series where thisopenspace sits down with talented members of our community. We asked them to share a bit about themselves and curate their favorite spaces on thisopenspace.
Matt is a freelance designer and photographer based in Vancouver, Canada. We asked him a few questions about what he does, how he does it, and the spaces that inspire him.
What do you tell your parents you do for a living? Do they get it? Why? Why not?
I tell them now I mostly do illustrations, photograph things(usually portraits, street scenes, and events), and some web design. They’ve always been really supportive of and willing to understand my creative work, ever since I could remember. I’m extremely grateful to them for that!
What inspires your creativity?
These days I spend much less time looking for inspiration online, and instead look to things around the city, nature, books and magazines. I often go out for walks around different parts of Vancouver, and I get inspired by a mix of the things I see all around me. Usually I’ll bring my camera, and photograph the things I want to remember later.
If you could collaborate with any person or brand on a project, who would it be?
I’d say IDEO. I’ve always loved the people-focused design and research work they do, especially for non-profits. It would be a dream to collaborate with them on something!
What’s your favourite place to be when you aren’t at work? Why?
I often like to head to Chinatown for a walk around the neighbourhood, to see completely different things from the rest of Vancouver. There’s some older spots I like to duck into for a break, like New Town Bakery or The Boss Bakery. There’s some newer spots too, like Matchstick or Propaganda Coffee.
What defines an amazing space?
The best spaces for me have an atmosphere with some character, lots of natural light, and good places to sit and relax.
If you could have the keys to any building in Vancouver, which would it be and why?
I’ve always had a thing for old industrial buildings, and I’ve always wanted to see the inside of the old Rogers Sugar warehouse. It’s probably the largest old building still standing on the Port of Vancouver, and I’d love to see it.
What did you consider when creating your wish list? Which was your favourite space and why?
When I use thisopenspace for photo shoots, I like to have lots of natural light and a variety of looks in the space to play with. This one is easily my favorite because it ticks all those boxes (I’ve shot in it twice now!).
Coffee, Tea, or Cold Pressed Juice?
Coffee, no doubt!
Brooklyn or Venice?
Manhattan or London?
London. I’ve always wanted to visit!
