[FIRSTLOOK] is where we introduce a new pop-up for the very first time. It's now in our UPCOMING calendar and should be in yours too.
This summer, SFU’s Beedie School of Business and Emily Carr’s Design program have teamed up to create sustainable products and businesses.
The students from #platformclass will be showcasing and launching their products from August 15 - 21 @thisopenspace. They will be doing pitches on opening night and will be available to speak to the public during the “1 Sale” . Student projects are addressing issues such as sustainable travel, social isolation, textile waste, cosmetics packaging, and food packaging.
Entrepreneurship has the opportunity to make massive changes in the way we can live sustainably in our economy. We need to be agile and efficient in addressing existing and impending problems in society. Design is starting to move more upstream in the process. The designer as entrepreneur is an emerging field. It’s no longer about putting lipstick on a pig, design is at the core of successful ventures. The role of business is also changing. It is longer an option to be sustainable, but a necessity. Business students tend to create obvious solutions that address symptoms rather than problems. The goal of #platFORMclass is to add more depth to the process and use a wider lens to position their products in a greater context.
Finding a method to for business and design to collaborate early on can be difficult. This is where educational institutes come in. They have the ability to experiment with new relationships with fewer barriers, and the spirit of research and experimentation. The students work in trans-disciplinary teams to develop products, services, and systems that address contemporary social, economic, and environmental issues. #platFORMclass is co-taught by Design Instructors Maia Rowan and Andreas Eiken, and Business instructors, Dr. Lisa Papania, and Dr. Sarah Lubik.
#platFORMclass Opening Night is Friday August 15 from 6-10pm
The storefront is open all week for "The 1 Sale" on Sat-Sun 11-9pm and Mon-Thurs 12-8pm.
