[THROUGH THEIR LENS] is a monthly feature by contributing photographer Becky Philpott showcasing photographers from Vancouver and around the world.
Richard Gilligan has been documenting skate culture for as long as he has been a part of it.
His first book, DIY, published last year by Prestel, chronicles the subculture of DIY skate parks around the world. These aren’t your average skate photos, Gilligan pushes beyond the standard skate-culture stock photo and reveals a rough and ready view of a world that instantly appeals to an audience wider than the usual devotees.
Skate photography isn’t his only forté. His portrait photography stands out among the rest as he quietly draws the viewer in to witness his (mostly famous) subjects in a quiet, contemplative moment. A true testament to his rapport and ease with his camera and his subjects.
Gilligan's latest book, Burnside, launched this month. Grab a copy here.
