[RECESS] is when we get to hear the stories of the good people behind the pop-up. It's our favourite time and we share these conversations with you.
We sat down with co-founders Shelly and Abid ahead of their upcoming fashion show and collection launch to chat about their inspiration and to find out what to expect with their first pop-up at our Chinatown store.
The streetwear brand is coming into the space for two days Nov. 10-11. Get the full calendar schedule on our Upcoming page.
@thisopenspace: How would you describe #COQOandRICH. Where did your style originate?
Shelly and Abid: The brand represents an attitude that stems from our hip-hop influencers, city life, and our love of graphics and visual art. The lifestyle that COQOandRICH signifies is one that weaves fashion, style, music and art together.
Tell us about the AW14 collection? How is it fresh and different from what you’ve done?
SB: Alexander McQueen once said, "It’s a new era in fashion - there are no rules. It’s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together." The AW14 collection is about taking risks to push our idea of what 'edge' can look like and showing a younger generation what fashion can be.
What can we anticipate seeing from you guys in the next while?
SB: We're always looking for new ways to improve, with new garments on the way - tanks, hoodies, and toques we plan to release in the next year. We will keep to street wear, clothes you can throw on for any occasion but we also aim not to replicate what's been done before.
What are some of your sources of inspiration? What guides the brand values?
SB: We are proud of our roots and our immediate world is a large source of inspiration for us - it's our foundation. We want to set a trend that is Vancouver-centric and for the brand to adored by those in our own city.
Does fashion influence culture or does culture influence fashion?
SB: Culture influences fashion. We want #COQOandRICH to allow wearers to express their own personality. Fashion is a medium for expression. For example, we have different styles but we meet at the intersection of our brand - we are a cohesive unit because of the like-minded culture we all embody.
