L A M P's (Lighting Architecture Movement Project) 2nd annual lighting design competition is set to go down in Mount Pleasant later this month and we're proud to be playing a small part in this year's event.
Over the last few months, we've helped LAMP secure the venue at 188 Kingsway, one of our temporary pop-up ready spaces. The building was previously covered with advertisement for "The Independent" development and ready to sit vacant for months before its imminent demolition (#VancouverProblems). We first announced the space back in September, and if you're not familiar with the large warehouse you can check out photos here. While the development has not been short of controversy in recent years , Rize (the developers) have been willing partners, worked with us every step of the way, and even given us the keys to put this empty warehouse to good use.
We could not have asked for a better looking venue to host LAMP 2014.
L A M P is first and foremost an International Lighting Design Competition. The competition asks designers to incorporate varying facets of lighting, architecture, and movement to instigate community engagement. This year, they received over 50 global submissions and have narrowed it down to 10 jury-select finalists. On November 20, L A M P is putting the top-10 lighting designs on display during a five day exhibition. These top-10 works have been applauded by Inform Interiors, Gray Magazine, Western Living and FontanaArt. Talk about popular. To get a glimpse at what to expect and play your hand and guessing the winner, check out the top 25 entries in the video below.
Tickets to the opening night celebration are up on Eventbrite. What can you expect? First, the top-10 submissions will be on display, as well as a one-of-a-kind piece by our pal Ricky Alvarez of Tinto Creative and Leanne Kriz. There'll be wine, beer, beats, and "a crowd of artists, architects, product designers, students, local business entrepreneurs, and design enthusiasts." Sounds like this party will really light it up (see what we did there?).
Come one come all, L A M P loves kids. They're hosting a Family Hour meet and greet with Science World's Future Science Leaders on opening night from 4:30-6PM. There's also a Kids Designing Light Workshop led by local designer Matthew McCormick on Saturday, November 22 open to kids ages 7-12.
